Rhode Island governor orders casinos to close for two weeks

Rhode Island is the latest state to implement a temporary casino closure per an order from Gov. Gina Raimondo.
Tiverton Casino Hotel and Twin River Casino Hotel will close for two weeks beginning Nov. 29 at 10 p.m.
Bally’s Corporation, formerly Twin River Worldwide Holdings, is headquartered in Rhode Island and operates both the state’s casinos.
The closures are part of a “two-week pause,” according to Gov. Raimondo. Rhode Island, like many states, is facing a rise in Covid-19 cases.
Though Gov. Raimondo said she hopes to roll back the order after two weeks, she warned that the new restrictions could extend further into December if the state is not seeing the numbers it would like.
Triverton and Twin River run a brick-and-mortar and online sportsbook in partnership with William Hill. The closures will likely lead to a further swing for mobile sports betting.
Nevertheless, the shutdowns come at an inopportune time for Bally’s, which just purchased sports betting technology company Bet.Works for $25m and closed a deal with Caesars Entertainment and VICI for Bally’s Atlantic City.
Bally’s also struck a deal with Sinclair Broadcast Group to earn the naming rights to Sinclar’s 21 sports networks. Bally’s will pay Sinclair $85m over 10 years.
