Pennsylvania gaming revenue grows to $479.4m for May

Pennsylvania has reported $479.4m in total gaming and fantasy contest revenue for May, representing a growth of 7.1% year-on-year.
The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) manages and reports on slot machines, table games, iGaming, sports wagering, fantasy contests and video game terminals (VGTs), with retail slots generating the highest revenue of $210.9m.
While retail slot revenue increased 2.5% from May 2022, the largest rise in revenue came from the state’s online slot games. Online slots brought in $100.6m, up 28.6% year-on-year.
Online table games also rose 17.3% to generate $37.9m, while retail table games decreased by 7.82%, but still remained the third-most successful segment at $81.6m.
Pennsylvania’s top casino in May was the Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course, bringing in $74.4m and up 18.3% from May 2022. The largest increase in revenue was 27.9% for Hollywood Casino Morgantown, which brought in $7.1m and has only been open for around a year and a half.
Valley Forge Casino Resort also experienced relatively high growth of 21.71% and brought in the second highest revenue of $64.2m. The newest casino in the Keystone State, Parx Shippensburg, has been open for nearly five months and generated $2.7m, down slightly from $2.8m the previous month.
The largest decrease in land-based casino revenue was experienced by Lady Luck Casino Nemacolin, dropping 18.9% to $1.7m. However, fantasy contests were the overall segment with the biggest decrease in revenue, falling 22.6% to $1.2m.
Sports betting revenue increased 17.4% to $41.1m. The state handle was $495.6m, higher than the total gaming revenue for May 2023, as well as a 0.45% increase on May 2022’s handle. Online sports wagering made up 90.2% of Pennsylvania’s total sports betting revenue and reached $37.1m.
