New study ranks Nevada as ‘most gambling obsessed’ state; Vermont the least
The results were based on search engine usage based on specific gambling-related keywords. New York also ranked highly.
A recent study released by Wetten.com has listed the US states that are “most obsessed about gambling.” The research ranked all 50 states from the greatest to the least interested.
Wetten outlined the terms of the study by saying: “The results were compiled by looking at Google trends data from the last 12 months for a range of gambling-oriented keywords like ‘casino,’ ‘blackjack’ and ‘slot machines.’”
Unsurprisingly, Nevada grabbed the top spot based on gambling-oriented keyword searches online. According to the study, search interest in Nevada beat the runner-up by 100%.
Wetten US analyst Josh Schwartz said of Nevada’s results: “Online gambling may be increasingly popular in many states in the US, but Nevada has retained its status as the most gambling-obsessed state.
“It will be interesting to see whether Nevada can hold onto its status as more states legalize gambling online, but for now there is no doubt which state is the home of casino gaming in the US.”
Kansas came a distant second to Nevada’s growing gambling interest based on searches conducted online. The states of New York, Oregon and Mississippi ranked third, fourth and fifth respectively.
States that ranked the lowest on the scale as the least “gambling obsessed” include New Hampshire, Maine, Montana, Alaska and Vermont. Wetton’s researched showed that Vermont residents searched for the outlined gambling terms online 1,000% less than those living in Nevada.
Schwartz connected search trends and online interest with legislative efforts to legalize online sports betting.
He said in closing: “The fact that the people of Vermont on the other end of the spectrum have little interest in online gambling can also be seen in the very limited traction attempts to legalize online sports betting has had.
“This despite the fact many other east coast states like Pennsylvania and New York have opened their doors for it.’
