Wynn CEO Matt Maddox: Strip casinos could reopen by end of May

Wynn Resorts CEO Matt Maddox said in a video directed to employees that Las Vegas Strip casinos could potentially reopen by the end of May.

Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak said that the state’s non-essential businesses will reopen over two phases. Wynn’s reopening would begin near the end of the second phase according to Maddox. 

Nevada has laid out benchmarks based on disease growth, hospital capacity and testing capacity. 

“Depending on how the state does with benchmarks, we could be in a position to be reopening at the end of May,” Maddox said. “While I can’t guarantee that we’re going to be opening at the end of May, it is really dependent on the science and the data coming out. We are preparing for that eventuality. 

Maddox was less concrete on when Encore Boston Harbor might reopen. 

Maddox also said the company would continue paying employees through the end of May. 

“We’re one of the very companies in our industry, not just the casino resort industry but hotels and airlines that have done this,” Maddox said. “The 75 days, which would be from March 15th till the end of May, we will have invested roughly a quarter of a billion dollars into payroll for all of you.”
