Mississippi reaches total sports betting handle of $1bn during February
It is the eighth state to reach the $1bn high water mark since the repeal of PASPA in 2018.
The Mississippi Gaming Commission has released its figures for the month of February. The state raked in a total of $47.8m for the month.
However, February’s handle dropped by 29.4% from January’s $67.7m total, which has been the state’s highest month to date.
Despite February’s drop from the previous month, its handle reflected an increase of almost 119% from the same time last year.
The state generated a total of $4.6m in revenue during February, reflecting a decrease from January’s revenue of 49.5%.
Mississippi bettors wagered more than $7.9m on various sporting events. A breakdown of the total shows football bringing in $517,183 in wagers, basketball bringing in more than $2.8m, parlay cards bringing more than $4.3m and another $182,846 coming in from other events.
The state also saw a decline in slot and table numbers. The handle from slots dropped in February by 14.4% compared to figures in January, while the handle from table games dropped by 11.7%.
Slot machines yielded more than $26.3m in winnings during February, with penny slots bringing in the largest amount of total winnings. Penny slots accounted for more than half of the total, paying out almost $15.3m in winnings.
Mississippi was one of the first states to give the green light for legalized sports betting after the US Supreme Court overturned the federal ban in May of 2018. The state first went live in August 2018.
It is also one of eight states to reach a total handle of $1bn since the industry’s launch. The state hit this milestone during the month of February.
