NBA G League, Second Spectrum ink technology partnership
New technology to be implemented in all G League games.
The NBA G League (the official minor league of the National Basketball Association) has entered into a partnership with Genius Sports subsidiary, Second Spectrum, that will see new, game-enhancing technology deployed at games.
Among the new possibilities at G League games will be accurate player and ball optical tracking systems and, as a result there will be far-improved data for players, coaches, fans, broadcasters and partners.
The new technology will be integrated in all G Leage venues.
This technology, known as the Official Optical Tracking, has been in use in the NBA since 2016. With its computer technology, it is able to produce innovative statistics, among them being shot probabilities, player health, defensive metrics and ball metrics.
Excited by the prospects that the new technology offers, NBA G League President Shareef Abdur-Rahm commented: “Working with Second Spectrum will provide the NBA G League with new data that will help our overall fan experience and advance scouting and player development for NBA teams.”
This sentiment was echoed in comments from Second Spectrum President Rajiv Maheswaran: “We’re excited to extend our deep partnership with the NBA by deploying our solutions to the entire G League.
“This is the first step in helping both NBA teams and G League teams, as well as leagues and media partners, understand and enjoy the players and the game at the unmatched level that we have brought to the NBA. It’s one step of many to help grow the game and move it forward everywhere.”
The NBA G League has already helped develop nearly 300 NBA players. The league’s streaming partners include ESPN and NBA TV.
