DraftKings reveals preliminary betting numbers for the Super Bowl
Some huge bets were placed before the game, including a $1m bet on the Cincinnati Bengals.
The biggest game of the NFL season has come and gone with as much fanfare as one would expect from one of the most extravagant sports in the world.
Prior to the game, which ended in triumph for the LA Rams, bettors were eager to place as many bets as they could, with some paying out as much as $5.1m. Indeed, following the game, DraftKings has released some insights into the wagering habits of its users.
Some huge bets were placed by punters before the game. One punter put a $1m wager on the Cincinnati Bengals that would have paid out $5.15m. Another bettor placed a wager on Bengals +6 that would have paid out $480,004.
Meanwhile, a punter put down over $200,000 on LA Rams -4 that would see them earn an impressive $463,305.
From a player-specific perspective, bettors believed that Aaron Donald was most likely to be the MVP, followed by Joe Burrow, both guesses were wrong, with Cooper Kupp coming out on top. Moreover, wagerers agreed that it would be Kupp or Odell Beckham Jr. to score the first touchdown, in the end, Odell scored the first. Kupp was also predicted to be the most likely player to score a touchdown at any time, he did.
Overall, around 4% more bets were placed on the Bengals, while handle was split evenly between the two sides.
With these insights, DraftKings predicted that this match would be the biggest betting event in United States’ history. While this remains to be seen, as all the data is yet to be collected, the money raised during the match is sure to reflect the unprecedented growth of US sports betting witnessed in recent years.
