Las Vegas mayor pleads with governor to limit coronavirus closures

Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman asked Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak to limit his order on closing down nonessential businesses for 30 days as response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Goodman spoke at a Las Vegas City Council meeting on Wednesday where she pleaded with the governor to limit the shutdown to eight to 10 days.

Goodman said: “We cannot survive any total shutdown of the economy of any length or time beyond the immediate week or two.”

Sisolak ordered a monthlong suspension to gambling on Tuesday evening.

More than a dozen Strip casinos had closed doors by Tuesday but many remained open.

The governor did not clarify how the state would regulate business closings.

Goodman said: “My full efforts will be focused on keeping as many of our people as possible employed and asking our governor to shorten the projected shutdown.”

Goodman noted that the Strip remained open during previous viral outbreaks.

The Strip last shut down on 25 Nov, 1963 for the funeral of John F. Kennedy.

Goodman said: “Any full out shutdown will cripple the state’s recovery not only for now but for several years to come. Our economy depends on tourism and being open for dining, entertainment and sports.”
