Iowa sportsbooks rally for $3.2m in January revenue

Iowa sportsbooks brought in $3.2m in January revenue, a rise of more than 11% from the month prior.

Revenue grew despite sports wagering handle falling 2% month-on-month to $58m. 

Mobile sports betting accounted for 58% of the handle. 

Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino led the way in January with revenue of $692,000, but that haul marked a 46% drop from the casino’s December revenue. 

A resounding 84% of Prairie Meadows’ revenue came from mobile sports wagering. 

Diamond Jo Worth Casino took in $446,000 of revenue at its retail-only sportsbook, an increase of 101% from December. 

Ameristar Casino and Hotel Council Bluffs earned January revenue of $416,000, up 67% month-on-month. 

Eight more sportsbooks topped six figures in revenue last month. 

Isle of Capri -Bettendorf posted a loss of $86,000, its second straight month in the red. 

Though Iowa’s sportsbooks cumulatively improved from December, the state still fell far short of the $5.7m it brought in this past October.

The drop in revenue over the last two months is likely related to the end of the college football season, which is immensely popular in the Hawkeye State.

January marked the fifth full month of sports betting in Iowa.
