Brazil: Boulos bullish on Government’s tax proposals
At his inauguration, new Minister Guilherme Boulos defended the Government’s proposed gambling tax hike, among other policies.
New Brazilian Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency, Guilherme Boulos, attacked those who oppose more taxation for bettors and the super-rich when he spoke at his inauguration ceremony.
In his speech he asked those gathered why the Government’s opposition aren’t unanimous in support of plans to increase taxation of those groups and discard the six-day working week common in Brazil.
An attempt by the ruling Workers Party to raise gambling taxes in the country floundered in Parliament this October, and current proposals of doubling it from 12% to 24% have divided opinion while keeping tensions high.
Boulos suggested that as long as the Government’s opponents claim to be ‘against the system,’ it would be hypocritical for them to oppose the Government’s fundraising policies.
“If they defend the people, why don’t they join us in ending the 6×1 scale?” he announced.
In his speech, Boulos acknowledged the work of his predecessor, Marcio Macedo, who served in the role under President Lula for nearly three years before his recent dismissal.
Boulos had been rumored to be in the running to replace Macedo were the axe to fall and is a close ally of the President.
He told the audience that while he would ensure to maintain productive lines of communication between Government and various civil sectors, he will not talk to “those who attack democracy and betray Brazil.”
President Lula was present as the new Minister signed the investiture, though he did not speak at the event.
Boulos added: “And we are here and we will stay here, and to them, enemies of democracy and of Brazil, we only have two things to say: Brazil belongs to Brazilians and there will be no amnesty.”
