Colorado sets new monthly handle record with September wagers of $408m

NFL wagers accounted for $126m of all handle in September.
Colorado sportsbooks generated handle of $408m in September, setting a new state record for most wagers in a single month.
The return of the NFL and college football led to the influx in wagers, as handle grew 92.5% from August. Handle was also up 96.2% year-on-year.
Online wagers made up $403m, or 98.8%, of all bets in September.
Gross gaming revenue for the month was $22.7m, a 49.3% increase from August and a remarkable 440% improvement y-o-y.
Unsurprisingly, it was the NFL that paced the way. Bettors placed $126m on pro football, spurred by the return of the Denver Broncos and the rest of the league. It helped that the Broncos went undefeated in their three September games.
NCAA football generated another $47m in handle, almost all of which was placed online. Colorado is home to the University of Colorado Buffaloes, Colorado State Rams and Air Force Falcons.
MLB was the second most wagered-on sport, producing handle of $68.7m despite the Colorado Rockies being out of contention for a playoff spot.
Basketball and tennis rounded out the top five most wagered-on sports with $16.3m in handle each.
Taxes collected by Colorado in September from sports betting wagers totaled $483,047.
The Centennial State market is becoming increasingly competitive with 25 online operators and 17 retail operators currently open. 888 Holdings’ SI Sportsbook is the most notable addition to the state, having launched on September 7.
