West Virginia February sports betting handle down 25% from month prior
West Virginia retail and online sportsbooks saw February handle of $38.2m, down 25% from January.
Handle fell less than 4% year-on-year from the $39.6m wagered in February 2020.
Sports betting revenue was $1.4m for the month, down 66% from January’s haul of $4m. West Virginia sportsbooks recorded -$626,000 in February 2020.
The West Virginia Lottery reports figures on a weekly basis, thus these numbers represent Jan. 31 to Feb. 27 activity.
Mobile accounted for $27m, or 70%, of the February handle, down 18% from the prior month.
The FanDuel Sportsbook at The Greenbrier recorded $14.3m of wagers to lead the state, while revenue hit $1.2m. The DraftKings Sportsbook, partner with Hollywood Casino at Charles Town, saw handle of $11m but revenue amounted to just $63,000.
Hollywood Casino led retail sportsbooks with handle of $6.4m and revenue of $350,000.
iGaming saw higher demand in February, with handle soaring to $117m, an improvement of 18% from January’s $99m. West Virginia offers online casino gaming and peer-to-peer poker.
West Virginia sportsbooks will be banking on a strong March Madness fueled by the nationally ranked University of West Virginia Mountaineers men’s basketball program. The Mountaineers are a projected No. 3 seed in this year’s NCAA Tournament according to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi.
