Massachusetts casinos report $105m in August revenue

The state also reported a $545.3m sports betting handle for the month.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) has released the state’s casino and sports betting reports for the month of August.
Massachusetts’ three casinos, Plainridge Park Casino, MGM Springfield and Encore Boston Harbor, posted more than $105m in gross gaming revenue (GGR) last month.
Slot machines accounted for nearly $73.9m of the state’s total GGR, while table games brought in another $31.1m.
Encore Boston Harbor generated more than half of the state’s combined casino GGR and was the top earner for the month. The casino reported $65m in August revenue.
MGM Springfield ended last month with nearly $25m in revenue from table games and slots. Plainridge Park Casino brought in close to $15.1m in total revenue in August.
Last month, all three casinos paid a total of close to $29.9m in state taxes.
Sports betting last month generated a $545.3m handle. Online bets contributed $537.4m in wagers, while players in August bet nearly $7.9m at retail locations.
Good to know: Retail sports betting became legal in Massachusetts in January 2023, followed by online sports betting market in March 2023
Online and retail sports betting locations reported close to $55.8m in taxable gaming revenue last month. The state collected almost $11.1m in taxes from online and retail sports betting in August.
In other state news, gaming regulator Jordan Maynard has recently for higher accountability in the US gaming industry.
He told reporters from The Guardian, “When I think about the industry right now, I see a highway without speed limits, cars without seatbelt dingers.
“Regulators are who put the seatbelt dingers in. I don’t think the car manufacturers just woke up one day and decided to annoy whoever’s driving the car until they put their seatbelt on.”
