Tennessee SWC confirms Sportzino exit

The Council stated ‘eliminating illegal sportsbooks’ is a strategic focus of the SWC in its mission to assure consumer protection through a ‘safe and regulated’ sports wagering environment.
Key Points
- Sportzino’s exit follows the cease of operations for both Legendz and Bovada in Tennessee, having departed in April and November 2024, respectively
- The SWC stated Tennessee bettors wagered $5.6bn throughout the last fiscal year, as the state currently allows for online sports betting from regulated operators
The Tennessee Sports Wagering Council (SWC) issued a statement on September 18 to announce Sportzino has ceased operations throughout the state, following the respective exits of Legendz and Bovada from Tennessee in April and November 2024, respectively.
“Offering sports wagering in Tennessee is a taxable privilege, and we’re exploring every tool available to us as regulators in our effort to shut down illegal sportsbooks,” SWC Executive Director Mary Thomas said.
“Licensed sportsbooks offer critical consumer protections that unlicensed operators do not, and we will continue to work with our law enforcement partners in this effort.”
Since its origin, the SWC has fined 12 illegal sportsbooks for a total of $600,000, with a third of the penalties coming in July 2025 alone. The Council stated “eliminating illegal sportsbooks” is a strategic focus of the SWC in its mission to assure consumer protection through a “safe and regulated” sports wagering environment.

The SWC warned Tennessee bettors of potential signs for an illegal sportsbook offering, such as the ability to extend credit, minimal age verification and accepting wagers for casino games or chance-based outcomes.
The Tennessee regulator also stated bettors wagered $5.6bn throughout the prior fiscal year, as the state currently allows for online sports betting from regulated operators.
