DraftKings restricting credit card use for online betting and casino on August 25

Good to know:
– The decision was confirmed to Gaming America by DraftKings on August 21, as the sportsbook also shared a statement detailing its reasoning for prohibiting credit card deposits
– DraftKings self-reported its Massachusetts violations on three separate occasions, totaling over $83,000 in accepted credit card funds
DraftKings has announced it will no longer accept credit card deposits for its online sportsbook and casino operations as of August 25, with the decision following a recent $450,000 fine from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) for unintentionally allowing users to deposit funds and gamble while using credit card payments in 2023 and 2024.
A spokesperson for the operator confirmed the news to Gaming America on August 21, having said, “DraftKings has made the strategic business decision to remove credit cards as a deposit option for sportsbook and casino in the United States.
“The change is intended to help customers avoid cash advance fees and higher interest rates often associated with this payment method and otherwise improve the deposit experience. Customers can still fund their DraftKings Sportsbook and casino accounts using debit cards, bank transfers (ACH), wire transfer and payment platforms like PayPal, Venmo or Apple Pay (with an eligible payment method, such as a debit card), where permissible.”
DraftKings self-reported its Massachusetts violations on three separate occasions, totaling over $83,000 in accepted credit card funds. The MGC also required proof DraftKings returned the funds to all 218 users as well as conducted a third-party audit to verify no additional money was deposited and/or wagered while using credit cards.
Good to know: The Missouri Gaming Commission chose to award both DraftKings and Circa Sports direct sports betting licenses on August 15, granting each operator the ability to offer sports wagering services within the state without a casino or professional sports team partner
DraftKings Senior Manager of Regulatory Operations Kevin Nelson had stated the operator misinterpreted the language of the law and believed it only applied to users making deposits while physically located in Massachusetts.
At the time of writing, states such as Iowa, New Hampshire, Oregon and Vermont all have laws in place to ban credit card deposits, while DraftKings also prohibits the use of credit cards for sportsbook and casino operations in Tennessee.
