Hawaii passes legislation aimed at stopping illegal gambling on Oahu

Key Points
- No forms of gambling are legal in Hawaii
- The state has signed three bills into law to help law enforcement crack down on illegal activity
The state of Hawaii has passed Bills 11, 12 and 13, which are aimed at cracking down on illegal game rooms on Oahu, according to a local report from Hawaii News Now.
These three laws are designed at helping city agencies combat illegal activity in the Aloha State, especially along the Waianae Coast of Oahu.
Leaders in the area have described these measures as “a critical step toward improving public safety.”
City Councilmember Adria Tupola told local news, “Bill 11 is actually creating fines for our gambling devices. Bill 12 strengthens the relationship between DPP and HPD when we crack down on building violations, and bill 13 specifically addresses that landlords work with HPD.”
According to Honolulu Prosecutor Steve Alm, illegal game rooms “are an island-wide problem and that more than 60 operations have been shut down in the last year.”
Alm told local news these new laws “will help strengthen their efforts.”
Good to know: All forms of gambling, including casinos, sports betting, lotteries and daily fantasy sports, are currently illegal in Hawaii
Over the years, state lawmakers have introduced legislation that would welcome legal gaming, but these attempts have not been successful.
Along with the District of Columbia, sports wagering is legal in 38 states. However, the legal online gaming market has not experienced the same explosive expansion as sports betting.
To date, online gaming is legal in some form in seven US states, although some of those have limited access, such as online poker only.
States with legal iGaming access include Pennsylvania, Delaware, Michigan, New Jersey, Rhode Island, West Virginia and Connecticut.
