Brazil: Senator rejects sabotage claims over CPI das Bets report
Key Points
- Senator Hiran denies sabotaging the CPI das Bets last report
- He says rejection was based on technical flaws and legal fragility
- Accuses Thronicke of turning disagreements into personal attacks
Senator Dr. Hiran, President of the Brazilian Parliamentary Inquiry on betting, also known in Brazil as CPI das Bets, has publicly denied accusations of sabotage made by Senator Soraya Thronicke following the rejection of her final report for the CPI.
In a statement released by his press office, Hiran called the allegations “baseless” and said they misrepresented technical disagreements as personal attacks.
Thronicke, the inquiry’s main speaker, had proposed the indictment of 16 individuals, including high-profile influencers such as Virginia Fonseca, and suggested a range of regulatory changes to manage the social harms of online gambling.
Her report, however, failed to gain majority support, with four senators voting against and three in favour.
Hiran defended the outcome as a collective decision by the CPI’s members based on legal and technical considerations. He said some of the indictment requests lacked juridical soundness and added that the inquiry had, at times, been “instrumentalised for personal and media gain.”
The Senator also responded to Thronicke’s comments about alleged threats she faced during the inquiry, asserting that such claims should be formally investigated by the proper authorities.
Good to know: Brazil’s Vice President, Geraldo Alckmin, supports raising the national betting tax rate beyond 18%
Despite the report’s rejection, Thronicke says the investigation has fulfilled its mission. She plans to forward the findings to relevant agencies, including proposals for stronger betting advertising rules.
The fallout between the senators shows the political friction surrounding Brazil’s approach to regulating the online betting industry.
