Iowa sports betting handle hits record $150m for January
Iowa sportsbooks took in a record $150m of sports wagers in January, a 42.7% jump from December.
Net revenue for the month was $11.3m, an increase of 50.5% from the month prior.
January marked the first full month where bettors were allowed to register via mobile or online versus in-person. More than 80% of the month’s wagers were placed online compared to 74.5% in December.
“January was the just first test of an unshackled market, but it didn’t take long to realize just how much Iowa’s sportsbooks have been held back by the state’s in-person registration requirements,” said Dustin Gouker, lead analyst for Play Iowa. “These will be an exciting next few months in the market, with some of the biggest sports-betting holidays — namely the Super Bowl and March Madness — buoying what should be rapid expansion. This is a whole new era in Iowa sports betting.”
Wild Rose Casino & Resort, which has three locations across the Hawkeye State, generated $40.1m in online bets through its primary license partner, DraftKings. Wild Rose, who also recently partnered with BetRivers, generated revenue of $2m.
The William Hill sportsbook at Prairie Meadows was right behind with $39.8m of online handle. William Hill / Prairie Meadows led the state in revenue with $2.9m.
Diamond Jo, which licenses FanDuel and BetMGM, took in online handle of $26.9m and revenue of $2.2m.
