- 2025’s theme, Seeking Understanding, aims to increase the awareness of problem gambling as a “serious yet often misunderstood” mental health condition
- Throughout March, local and national organizations will host special events, offer educational workshops and engage in local advocacy efforts to advance the primary goals of Problem Gambling Awareness Month
The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) has begun its observation of Problem Gambling Awareness Month, set to run through March 2025, and also declared this year’s theme as Seeking Understanding.
The theme aims to increase the awareness of problem gambling as a “serious yet often misunderstood” mental health condition by improving public understanding, removing barriers to care and encouraging open conversations.
“Problem gambling is often described as a ‘hidden addiction,’ and with an estimated 9m Americans affected, the need for awareness and support has never been greater,” NCPG Director of Communications Cait Huble said.
“By fostering a deeper understanding of the issue, we can encourage empathy, reduce barriers to treatment and provide support to those affected by gambling-related harm.”
Good to know: Former NCPG Executive Director Keith Whyte recently announced his departure from the role on January 13, with Nancy Green having been appointed as Interim Executive Director in his place
Throughout March, local and national organizations will host special events, offer educational workshops and engage in local advocacy efforts to advance the two primary goals of Problem Gambling Awareness Month.
The NCPG’s goals for the month include increasing public awareness and treatment while also encouraging healthcare providers to screen clients for problem gambling.
The Council stated approximately 2.5m US adults suffer from severe gambling problems, with an additional 5-8m facing mild to moderate gambling problems due to their gambling behavior.
