Lawmakers in Virginia table bill that would add Fairfax to eligible casinos list

Key Points
- The bill was presented by Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell, who stated that the House will continue discussions regarding the legislation following the February 12 vote
- The subcommittee’s Chairman, Del. Paul Krizek, reportedly voiced opposition towards the bill at a public event held days prior in Alexandria, Virginia
Lawmakers in Virginia have made the decision to table legislation that would include Fairfax on the list of state localities that are eligible to develop a casino despite passing through the Virginia Senate with a 24-16 vote.
Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell, who originally introduced bill 982, stated that the House will continue discussions surrounding the legislation after House leadership moved the bill between committees for consideration.
While it is typical for House leadership to move legislation between committees, the decision came one day after Del. Paul Krizek was meant to take up the bill in the gaming subcommittee he currently serves as Chairman.
During a public event held in Alexandria, Virginia just days prior to the House’s decision to table the legislation, Krizek reportedly voiced opposition towards the casino bill, wishing to see specific regulations around gaming to the increased level of interest from residents.
Good to know: The Virginia Lottery released the state’s sports betting activity for December 2024 on January 31, which includes a reported handle of nearly $734.4m, representing an increase of 16% from the prior year period
He also mentioned that it “hurts” to oppose the bill, so perhaps with additional context, the legislation would have a greater chance of passing through the House Appropriations subcommittee.
Krizek said he desires to use a budget amendment to establish the Virginia Gaming Commission, which would serve as an independent agency meant to oversee the regulation of all forms of legal gambling, except the Virginia Lottery.
