Mississippi regulator gives green light for one proposed Biloxi casino site

However, the commission has put another proposed casino application on hold.
Key Points
- Tullis Garden Hotel and Casino got permission to proceed with its project
- However, the approval is contingent on resolving some legal issues
The Mississippi Gaming Commission has approved a proposed east Biloxi casino site, according to a Sun Herald local news report.
During a meeting held in Jackson, the Commission voted to allow Tullis Garden Hotel and Casino to establish its site that is “contingent upon legal issues being resolved,” Gaming Commission Executive Director Jay McDaniel told local news.
McDaniel added, “The Commission recognizes that there’s litigation over that site involving the Secretary of state’s office.”
The Tullis casino site plans to build a 300-room hotel, as well as a 53,280 square foot casino that will be home to more than 900 slot machines, 35 table games, restaurants and a sportsbook.
However, the state regulator has deferred site approval for another casino project involving the Tivoli casino. The application was delayed “for additional consideration.”
A recent lawsuit filed by Secretary of State Michael Watson claims that “a tidelands lease is required for the casino to be a legal site.”
Watson filed the suit in Harrison County Chancery Court.
The proposed Tivoli resort would be home to a 100,000 square-foot casino with 2,000 slot machines, a sportsbook, convention space and 75 table games.
In addition to the casino, the site would have a 1,300-room hotel.
Good to know: Retail sports betting is currently legal in Mississippi
However, legislative negotiators were not able to advance a final mobile sports betting proposal, which means online sports betting will continue to remain illegal throughout the state.
Earlier in the state’s most recent legislative session, both the Senate and the House passed versions of the state’s Mobile Sports Wagering Act.
But concerns surrounding the fate of Mississippi’s brick-and-mortar casinos kept the bill from further advancement.
