Alabama legislation could revisit gambling discussion in 2025

Lawmakers in favor of a legal market say the topic is ‘still on the table.’
Key Points
- Previously proposed pro-gambling bills have not passed
- The state has also pitched legislation to raise penalties for illegal activity
Alabama lawmakers have not given up on bringing legal gambling to the state, according to a local WIAT news report.
Last session’s gambling bill sponsors told the local network that “the issue is not going away, and it is very much still on the table.”
This would mean that state legislators could revisit the topic of expanded gambling in 2025.
Senator Greg Albritton commented on illegal gambling in Alabama to local news and shared what he believes could be a way to combat this market.
He said, “It is here. It is here to stay. And the only thing we can do in Alabama is try to grasp control of that industry so we can protect the public and be a beneficiary of it.”
Albritton recently sponsored a statewide gambling bill, which the Senate rejected last year.
Good to know: Currently, Alabama as no legal gambling markets
The state has pushed to crack down on illegal gaming activity through proposed legislation that would significantly raise the penalties.
Should the bill pass, the charge for operating illegal gambling could be changed from a Class A misdemeanor to a Class C felony.
This would apply to those charged with “possession of electronic gambling machines and other offenses.”
In addition to the higher charge, violators could face an increase in fines that would more than double what the penalty in Alabama is now.
Fines could increase from up to $6,000 to up to $15,000 under the terms of the proposed bill. A second offense could bring with it a Class B felony and prison time ranging from two to 20 years, along with a $30,000 fine.
