Aristocrat obtains preliminary injunction against Light & Wonder for trade secrets infringement

The provider has attained a preliminary injunction against L&W for the breach of intellectual property.
Aristocrat Technologies has officially obtained a preliminary injunction as part of the latest proceedings in its legal case against Light & Wonder (L&W), for the infringement of Aristocrat’s intellectual property and misappropriation of its trade secrets.
The case is centered around L&W’s online game, Dragon Train. As per this latest motion from Judge Gloria M. Navarro of the United States District Court for the District of Nevada – L&W is now prohibited from “any continued or planned sale, leasing or other commercialization of Dragon Train.”
As recognized by the court, L&W has been deemed to have developed Dragon Train through the misappropriation of Aristocrat trade secrets, subsequently obtaining profits without “investing the equivalent time and money,” thus giving the organization an unfair advantage in the eyes of the law. The court also added that, as per this latest decision, Aristocrat is “extremely likely to succeed in demonstrating L&W misappropriated Aristocrat’s trade secrets in [L&W’s] development of Dragon Train.”
Aristocrat CPO, Matthew Primmer, spoke on the development, saying, “We are extremely pleased with the court’s decision. This ruling underscores the value of our intellectual property and reaffirms our commitment to protecting the integrity of our business. We will continue to innovate and invest in cutting-edge solutions, knowing that the law protects our creative efforts.”
However, Light & Wonder has also released an official statement in contention with the Court’s decision, stating, “We respectfully disagree with the judge’s decision and will promptly file an appeal. We will continue to vigorously defend against Aristocrat’s claims, including presenting our defenses to a jury at a trial.”
“Light & Wonder reaffirms its 2025 $1.4bn targeted consolidated AEBITDA. We expect continued strong growth across all our businesses. The Company is moving forward on a number of key initiatives to mitigate the immediate impact and any continuing business disruption from today’s order.”
Earlier this year, in May, both companies reported positive financial results, with L&W’s Q1 2024 consolidated revenue figure reaching $756m. Aristocrat revealed its own H1 2024 results shortly after, highlighting an operational revenue of AU$3.27bn (US$2.18bn) for the period.
