Illinois Lottery celebrates 50 years with summer retail tour
The tour will travel statewide from now until August.
This summer, the Illinois Lottery will celebrate its 50th anniversary. The state lottery will offer players a series of sweepstakes, promotions and deals to commemorate the occasion.
Players can participate in the celebration starting next month.
The lottery has kick off its retail tour, which will move across the state throughout the summer and will wrap up in August.
Illinois Lottery Director Harold Mays gave a brief overview of the lottery’s history and said that the group desires to continue giving players quality entertainment going forward.
He commented, “The Illinois Lottery started our journey back in July of 1974 and was the first state to air a drawing live on television. When we look back on all these years, there is so much nostalgia, excitement and history to be proud of.
“Our rich history is what made the Illinois Lottery what it is today, and we continue to strive to make a difference in local communities across the state of Illinois.”
In other state news, an Illinois representative recently submitted a proposal that could lead to statewide legalization of video poker and slot machines.
Representative Kam Buckner’s measure seeks to address needs within the community, including Chicago’s revenue needs and racial disparities within the video gaming industry. The plan is that the city would exchange the current sweepstakes machines in bars and gas stations for state-licensed betting machines.
Under the current proposal, the new machines would be both regulated and taxed.
The state of Illinois first welcomed legalized video gambling in 2012. However, Chicago never amended its local laws by lifting restrictions on devices that are currently present in liquor-serving establishments like bars, taverns and restaurants.
