Casino review: Gaming America visits Four Winds South Bend

Pulling off the highway and taking the winding road to Four Winds in South Bend was like experiencing Dorothy’s transition from her black-and-white reality to the colorful world of OZ.
Four Winds South Bend’s visual appeal did not disappoint, with pristine landscaping and an assortment of colorful flowers. Its parking lot was a reasonable size, with plenty of spaces available for those with disabilities.
The casino hotel is owned and operated by the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians. The Tribe currently runs casinos in Hartford, New Buffalo, Dogawiac and South Bend, which is its only Indiana casino hotel.
Its other three casinos are in Michigan.
Walking inside Four Winds only heightened the bubbling excitement I felt after pulling into the parking lot. I was greeted by a friendly staff member who quickly checked my ID and wished me good luck.
Then, I checked out some of the slots.
The casino floor had no shortage of games. Four Winds South Bend’s gaming floor features more than 1,800 slot machines in various denominations that range from a penny to $100.
The casino offers players a few fan favorites that include Triple Blazing 7’s Double Quick Hits, Huff N’ Puff and Lock it Link Piggy Bankin’.
Four Winds is also home to 27 table games and 12 live poker tables, as well as a high-limit area and sportsbook.
Poker gurus can play a variety of games at Four Winds, including $1 to $2 No Limit Hold’em, $2 to $5 No Limit Hold’em, $3 to $6 Limit Hold’em and $1 to $2 Pot Limit Omaha.
After a couple of hours on the gaming floor, I took a break to sample the food. Four Winds has several dining options, including a hotel restaurant, buffet and other grab-and-go options.
The hotel’s restaurant is on the third floor. The wait to be seated was not long, maybe a couple of minutes despite walking in during lunchtime. The restaurant’s staff was warm, friendly and conversational, a common thread throughout the entire property.
The food at Four Winds rivals top restaurant quality but is at a price point that does not break the bank. The menu featured several tasty options for less than $20 an entrée.
Plus, the hotel’s restaurant serves breakfast food all day, a major plus for those who love a good slice of bacon, a piece of sausage or an order of eggs no matter what time of day it is.
I was not able to try the casino’s buffet because it was closed when I visited, which gives me another reason to pay Four Winds South Bend another visit.
This casino embodies all the elements of a classy and high-quality entertainment destination. This is one I highly recommend if you are in the area and within driving distance.
