The Dealer: Netflix Announces New Crime TV Show From Squid Game Creator

Netflix has announced the start of production on The Dealer, a Korean crime series developed by Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk.
The Dealer: Inside New Netflix Show
Hwang tackled deadly versions of children’s games in Squid Game. Now, he’s heading into the dark world of gambling in The Dealer.
Per the Netflix logline, “The Dealer is a crime drama series that follows Geonhwa, a brilliant casino dealer whose wedding plans suddenly fall apart, forcing her to unleash her long-hidden powers and plunge into the dangerous world of gambling, in order to successfully make it down the aisle.”
Jung So-min leads the cast as Geonhwa, an exceptionally adept and seasoned dealer who has lived a life far removed from the vices of the casino floor. After a housing scam disrupts her wedding plans, Geonhwa must enter the underworld and put her supernatural powers to use.
The cast also stars Ryoo Seung-bum as Hwang Chisu, a degenerate gambler desperate for money who gets involved in Geonhwa’s plan; Lee Soo-hyuk as Jo Jun, a superior casino player with impressive skills; and Ryu Kyung-soo as Choi Wooseung, a relentless detective and Geonhwa’s fiancé.
Choi Young-hwan will helm The Dealer in his directorial debut. Choi is an acclaimed cinematographer who worked on Smugglers, Veteran, Tazza: The High Rollers, and The Thieves.
Hwang joins the series as a producer. Firstman Studio, the company behind Squid Game, will produce The Dealer.
The casino crime drama will stream exclusively on Netflix.
Netflix Hoping for Another Historic Hit
It’s fair to say that Squid Game changed Netflix’s trajectory as an international streaming service.
Hwang’s South Korean thriller involved a game show where contestants compete in childhood games — including red light-green light and tug of war — for millions of dollars. What the contestants quickly learn is that if they fail during the game, they die.
The shock value alone of Squid Game transformed the show into a sensation.
Released in September 2021, Squid Game quickly became Netflix’s No. 1 most-watched non-English show of all time. Squid Game Seasons 2 and 3 are No. 2 and No. 3 on the same list.
Squid Game made history by becoming the first non-English television series to win Emmys. Nominated for 14 Emmys, Squid Game won six, including Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series (Lee Jung-jae) and Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series (Hwang Dong-hyuk).
Squid Game even crossed over into gambling culture, with themed slot machines at select casinos.
