Man Threatens to Bomb Lake Tahoe Casino After $20,000 Gambling Loss

A South Lake Tahoe man is facing multiple felony charges after authorities say he threatened to bomb a Stateline casino following significant gambling losses earlier this week.
Bomb Threat Placed On Lake Tahoe Casino After Man Loses $20k
According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were alerted to a bomb threat at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe Casino and Hotel late in the night on Monday, January 5th after casino security received a disturbing phone call. The caller reportedly claimed he had lost more than $20,000 gambling and threatened to destroy the property using explosives.
The call came in just before 10 p.m., prompting an immediate response from casino security and local law enforcement. Officials say the threat was taken seriously due to the region’s history, including the infamous 1980 bombing at Harvey’s Resort Hotel and Casino, which caused extensive damage but no fatalities.

Investigators quickly traced the phone call to Seth Maybee, a resident of South Lake Tahoe. Working alongside the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, deputies located Maybee at his home early Tuesday morning. He was taken into custody around 1:45 a.m. without incident.
Maybee has been charged with making a bomb threat and making terroristic threats, both serious offenses under Nevada law. Following his arrest, he was booked into the El Dorado County Jail in California and is expected to be extradited to Douglas County to formally face the charges.
Stateline Area Remains Vigilant Due To Prior Incidents
Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley commended both Harrah’s Casino security staff and the South Lake Tahoe Police Department for their swift action. In a statement, Coverley emphasized the importance of treating all threats as credible, particularly in Stateline, where casinos remain vigilant due to past acts of violence.
“Because of what happened at Harvey’s in the early 1980s, these types of threats are never taken lightly,” Coverley said. “We’re thankful for the quick reporting and coordinated response that allowed us to resolve this situation before anyone was harmed.”

Authorities confirmed that no explosives were found and that the casino was never in immediate danger. Still, officials reiterated that threats of this nature can result in significant legal consequences, regardless of whether the individual intended to follow through.
The investigation remains ongoing, and law enforcement officials urge anyone experiencing gambling-related distress to seek help through responsible gaming resources rather than resorting to actions that endanger public safety.
