Judd-Stein and Simermeyer will be leaving their roles as Chairs of the MGC and NIGC respectively.

Sequoyah Simermeyer, Chairman of the National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) and Cathy Judd-Stein, Chair of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC), are set to leave their roles in the coming weeks. Both Chairs have been with their respective Boards for over five years, leading their Boards through the changes brought about by Covid-19 and the growing legalization of sports betting across US states.

Simermeyer is expected to leave at the end of this week (February 24), while Judd-Stein is expected to retire from her role on March 21.

During his tenure, Simermeyer has been a part of leading the recovery of the Tribal market post-pandemic, with the market’s gaming gross revenues reaching a record $40.9bn last year. He described his experience, saying, “I'm proud of the integral part this Agency has played in meeting the challenges of an evolving industry and encouraged that NIGC's strong cadre of professionals will continue to work hand-in-hand with gaming operations to ensure tribal gaming remains primarily for the benefit of its citizens.”

Judd-Stein meanwhile stated, “It is with immense pride and unwavering optimism that I conclude my time as Chair of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission.”

Both have participated in previous issues of the CEO Special, with Judd-Stein featured in our 2024 Gambling Insider edition. On her work with sports betting licenses, she said, “Perhaps the most rewarding and unexpected benefit in terms of our sports wagering licenses hit recently. Massachusetts asks a lot of our licensees... But we are also working with intentionality around diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) – which are very important in Massachusetts, and in our nationwide dialogue.”

Meanwhile, when participating in the most recent Gaming America CEO Special, Simermeyer said, “I knew as a native person, through my own experiences and interactions with other Tribal communities, that I always wanted to try to work on behalf of, or work with, Tribal Governments.”
