October brought in $5.8m to the Old Line State.

Last month, Maryland recorded its highest total for sports wagering in a single month, with $5.8m contributed from its 13 retail and 12 mobile sportsbooks, with each sportsbook paying 15% of its taxable win to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund. The previous record was $5.3m back in March of this year.

Sports wagering was first launched in the state of Maryland in December 2021, with five retail locations, before the first seven mobile sportsbooks launched in November 2022.

Statewide handle in October totaled $483.1m, with 95.9% of the total accounted for by mobile handle at $463.5m. In terms of contributions, mobile wagering accounted for $5.5m of the contributions, with retail sportsbooks making up the other $310,717 to the State of Maryland.

Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director John Martin gave his thoughts: “People love to bet on football and that is certainly reflected in the handle this time of year.

“The Ravens’ success and college football are contributing factors, and there is a convergence of the seasons in October, with the baseball playoffs and World Series and the start of hockey and basketball.

"From an overall perspective, the results show that a robust market has taken shape here in Maryland and is making a steady contribution to the state’s education programs.”

Looking closer at the numbers, Live! Casino contributed a massive $2.9m to the state through mobile sports wagering in October, while MGM National Harbor contributed $132,785.97 to the stage in October through its retail sports wagering.

The cumulative contribution to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund since sports wagering was introduced in Maryland has been $43.1m, while the cumulative expired prizes contributed to the Problem Gambling Fund has been $2.7m for the same period.
