NCPG changes problem gambling helpline toll-free number

The former number will continue to route calls to the helpline.

The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) has changed its Helpline number. Those needing assistance can now reach the Helpline at 1-800-GAMBLER.

The NCPG said part of the motivation for changing the number was so that callers have access to a number that is “easily recognizable and memorable.”

Callers around the country can call in to the confidential helpline 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The new toll-free number is currently working throughout the state of Nevada, along with its corresponding chat features and text messaging.

The council is urging both restricted and nonrestricted licensees to make the appropriate updates to their materials as soon as they are able.

In an official release, the council laid out the responsibilities those holding licenses will have regarding the number change.

The organization said, “Each licensee shall post or provide in conspicuous places in or near gaming and cage areas and cash dispensing machines located in gaming areas written materials concerning the nature and symptoms of problem gambling and the toll-free telephone number of the National Council on Problem Gambling or a similar entity approved by the Board Chair that provides information and referral services for problem gamblers.”

The council went on to add that those who call the Helpline’s previous number will still have access to problem gambling assistance.

The group said in its statement, “Please note that the former number will continue to function and connect callers to the same Helpline.

“As a result, licensees do not need to destroy existing materials or make a rapid change to the new number to comply with the regulation."
