The three casinos in Massachusetts brought in $97.9m this month, while sports wagering revenue reached $22.7m.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has posted a total taxable gaming revenue of $120.6m for the month of August. The state’s three casinos brought in $97.9m of that total, a 6.4% increase from the $92m generated in August 2022.

Sports betting went live in Massachusetts on January 1 this year, and as such there is no yearly data. However, sports betting in the Bay State generated $22.7m in taxable sports wagering revenue this August, down 22.8% from the previous month’s $29.4m.

Online sports betting represented $22.5m of that $22.7m total, with the top sports betting provider in the state, DraftKings, generating nearly half of that revenue with $10.8m. FanDuel had the next-highest revenue of $7.4m, while BetMGM came in third place with $2.4m.

Plainridge Park Casino brought in the most retail sports betting revenue with $150,773.13, while Encore Boston Harbor lost $57,925 on its retail sports betting component. Encore Boston Harbor, however, brought in the most combined table and slot gross gaming revenue (GGR) of $61.3m, or 62.6% of the state’s total casino GGR.

Slot games proved to be more popular in the state, although only two of the three casinos (Encore Boston Harbor and MGM Springfield) offer table games. Slot GGR reached $67.5m, up from $64.9m in August 2022, while table game GGR reached $30.4m, up from $27.2m last year.

The report states that taxes collected from casino operations to date now totals $1.52bn. This figure was $1.18bn in August 2022, showing an overall growth of 28.3% within Massachusetts’ casino industry year-on-year.
