Connecticut-based company will build integrated resort/casino in Athens

Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment, Uncasville, Connecticut, submitted the winning bid to the Hellenic Gaming Commission to develop an integrated resort and casino in Greece.

Mohegan is partnering with GEK TERNA, a Greek company whose operations include construction, energy production and other industries.

The new property, to be known as INSPIRE Athens, will include a luxury hotel, entertainment venues, a convention center, shopping, dining, a casino and other amenities, the companies said in a statement.

“We are honored to have been chosen by the Hellenic Gaming Commission and believe that as the first Integrated Resort and Casino experience in Greece, INSPIRE Athens will further solidify the City of Athens as one of Europe's most enticing and iconic destinations,” said Mario Kontomerkos, Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment's president and CEO. “We recognize the importance of this transformative effort for Greece and are looking forward to leading the charge for one of the most ambitious development projects ever undertaken in the country.”

Officials estimate the project will create more than 7,000 jobs in the region during and after construction, including direct, indirect and induced employment.

Mohegan Gaming operates several resorts, including Mohegan Sun in Connecticut, Inspire in Incheon, South Korea, and Niagara Casinos in Niagara, Canada. Pending regulatory approval, it soon expects it will run a casino in Las Vegas.
