Churchill Downs Incorporated (CDI) will resume its live racing schedule at Churchill Downs Racetrack starting September 14. The company recently conducted an internal safety review of its racing operations and protocols during a temporary suspension.
CDI’s internal review resulted in several enhancements the company hopes will “further ensure the safety and well-being of equine and human athletes.” Some of the changes include infrastructure upgrades, increased veterinary oversight, working with industry experts and setting up a Safety Management Committee.
The new committee will be comprised of veterinarians, horseman designees and racetrack employees. Together, they will discuss “concerns and observations” and offer real time feedback to further improve overall safety.
CDI CEO Bill Carstanjen affirmed the group’s continuing focus on safety for everyone involved.
He commented, “We are excited to resume live racing again at Churchill Downs. Our commitment to safety remains paramount as we enter this September meet and our participants, fans and the public can be assured that we will continue to investigate, evaluate and improve upon every policy and protocol.”
In honor of its upcoming 150th anniversary, Churchill Downs Racetrack recently released details for the 150th Run for the Roses, which includes a year-long celebration in honor of the upcoming 2024 race.
Churchill Downs Racetrack President Mike Anderson commented, "150 years of tradition, hospitality and the best horse racing in the world takes center stage as the Kentucky Derby celebrates an extraordinary achievement.
"To honor the significance of the anniversary, the rich history of the Derby and its place in our culture, we are excited to unveil new and enhanced guest experiences for decades to come."
