Konami SVP: ‘A popular game theme traces back to a compelling math model’

Gerard Crosby discusses the success of theming in slot machine games.

Gaming America recently spoke to Gerard Crosby, SVP & Chief Games Product Officer at Konami Gaming, about the popularity of slot games and their themes over the years. More on this topic will also be included in Gaming America’s July/August issue.

Anyone who has ever set foot in a casino can recall and visualize some beloved and ubiquitous slot machine themes. When asked which themes have been in Konami’s games the most throughout the years, the company’s list resonates with several tried-and-true industry concepts.  

Crosby said, “We often see fire, dragons, gems and currency, such as coins, ingots, chips and gold.” Titles of Konami’s best-performing slots, as stated by Crosby, all invoke those themes: Dragon’s Law, Stuffed Coins and African Diamond.

However, Crosby added that while many classic and recognized themes have been cultivated by slot developers, the company has not seen any new themes emerging as frontrunners in current game design. “We don’t see any particular trend in themes. At Konami we develop a wide variety of themes to appeal to a diverse audience.”

Konami not only develops slots, but also casino management systems and other technology. Earlier this year, Konami’s Synkros system was implemented at The Temporary at American Place, a gaming venue in Illinois, and its facial recognition patents were licensed to Independent Gaming.

Konami also partnered with Caesars Entertainment in February to provide slot titles to locations in New Jersey, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Ontario.

The company’s focus on technology was apparent in Crosby’s answers about what makes a good slot machine game. He said, “The success of a popular game theme traces back to a compelling math model. If this is combined with attractive and memorable game mechanics, art, sound and packaging then it’s sure to be an entertaining experience for all players.”
