Ontario iGaming generates CA$1.4bn in revenue for Canada’s first legal province

IGaming Ontario Executive Director thanks players, operators and regulations for a successful first year.

In Ontario’s first year of legal iGaming, the Canadian province saw CA$35.6bn (US$26.4bn) wagered and nearly $1.4bn in total gaming revenue, cementing it as one of the top five North American iGaming authorities.

IGaming Ontario announced the results upon the open market’s anniversary. On April 4, 2022 Ontario launched an open, regulated iGaming market. More than 1.6 million player accounts are now active in Canada’s first province to legalize iGaming. Over 40 operators have agreements with iGaming Ontario.

Attorney General Doug Downey said, “Ontario’s iGaming market has displaced the pre-existing unregulated market and made Ontario a recognized leader in this industry. We are truly proud of this strong, responsible, competitive online gaming model.”

IGaming Ontario’s numbers have shown an average monthly spend of CA$70 per active player. A March 2023 Ipsos survey stated that around 85% of those who gambled online throughout the past three months in the province used regulated sites.

Dave Forestell, VP, Canada External Relations for TC Energy, said, “Today’s numbers demonstrate that Ontario has one of the best online gaming markets in the world. Since Ontario opened the market we have seen new investment, job creation, and revenue that used to leave the province.”

Ontario’s most bet-on sport was basketball, which garnered 28% of wagers, followed by soccer (15%), football (14%), hockey (9%) and lastly baseball (8%). Almost half of all casino wagers were placed on slots, while 32% were on live dealer table games, with the remainder placed on digital table games.
