As part of the United Nations’ World Water Day 2023, Sands has affirmed its commitment to responsible water use. The company has set a 2025 goal to “reduce potable water use per square foot by 3% from a 2019 baseline.”
Sands said in an official statement: “Sands is dedicated to preserving this critical resource by improving ongoing water use in business and resort operations, while maintaining the superior experience guests expect at its properties.
“Over the past few years, reducing the water footprint in restaurants has become a significant focus through efforts such as integrating water-efficient fixtures and appliances and pinpointing areas for better water management.”
The UN designated March 22 as World Water Day to encourage families and businesses to contribute to water conservation by highlighting the importance of continuing access to fresh water.
Sands Senior VP and Chief Sustainability Officer Katarina Tesarova discussed the various ways water plays a key role in day-to-day resort operations.
She said: “Water is one of the resources most critical to our business. From showers in hotel rooms and drinking fountains in offices to our 200-plus restaurants that use water to clean, cook and serve guests, water is integral to delivering service to all who enter our resorts.
“Water also is fundamental to our building operations, from cooling systems to landscaping.”
To contribute to World Water Day efforts, Sands as laid out a strategic plan to address its water consumption several ways. The company said it will work toward using low-flow water fixtures and high-efficiency equipment throughout its resorts’ fountains, pools, spas and hotel rooms.
Sands will also focus on rainwater capturing and by expanding its water-smart management program.
