ClimateCandy provides 'sweet' opportunity for change

Operal incentivizes climate action through a new approach: mobile gaming.

As the world gears up for the next global ClimateStrike on March 3rd, Swiss gaming studio Operal is taking a unique approach to inspire climate action. With its mobile game ClimateCandy, Operal gives people the chance to make a positive impact on the planet, simply by playing games.

ClimateCandy rewards gamers with nature-based solutions carbon credits for every level completed. These retirements of emissions support climate initiatives around the world. Players also generate revenue directed towards impact by watching ads in the game.

In conjunction with the global ClimateStrike, Operal’s new campaign encourages gamers to download and play ClimateCandy. For every download of the app during the ClimateStrike, Operal will retire an additional 50kg of CO2. The goal is to raise awareness of the impact that individuals can have on the planet, even in small ways.

Operal President of the Board Toni Caradonna says, "We believe that everyone can make a difference in the fight against climate change, regardless of their financial means.

"Through ClimateCandy, we hope to inspire gamers around the world to take action, join the global ClimateStrike, and make a positive impact on the planet."

Operal hopes to create buy pressure on the carbon market, making avoidance and reduction of emissions more attractive than compensation. The global ClimateStrike, organized by Fridays for Future, is expected to be one of the largest climate strikes in history, with millions of people around the world participating and demanding urgent action on climate change.

ClimateCandy has already garnered over 100,000 downloads in its first month, retiring more than 1,000 tons of CO2.
