GeoComply conducted a record 100 million geolocation checks across 23 US states and Washington DC during the Super Bowl weekend, showing a 25% increase from last year’s big game. This was the very first Super Bowl to take place in a state with legal sports betting – Arizona.
GeoComply registered 7.4 million accounts over the weekend which represented a 32% increase from last year. The company’s data shows more than 100,000 geolocation checks in and around State Farm Stadium in Glendale, AZ, from over 8,000 fan sportsbook accounts.
New York was cited as the most prolifically betting state, with 13.9 million geolocation checks registered in The Empire State.
GeoComply Co-Founder & CEO Anna Sainsbury commented: “Super Bowl LVII was a record-breaking event. Data reveals that Americans’ interest in legally betting on the Super Bowl has never been higher. It also showed that many fans at State Farm Stadium embraced their newfound ability to bet while watching the game in person.”
The teams competing were Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadephia Eagles, with both of their home states receiving a huge bolster in sports bets (most of the respective team’s fans hail from sports betting-legal states).
Kansas launched online sports betting in September 2022 with BetKansas Lead Analyst Christopher Boan saying the state used Arizona's launch as a model for its own. The Sunflower State recorded 2.1 million geolocation transactions, up 15.9% from the 2022 Super Bowl.
This is in comparison to Pennsylvania’s 11.8 million geolocation transactions, as the Coal State was one of the earliest states to legalize sports betting, in November 2018.
