GeoComply data shows that the Buckeye State was the most active in the US during this period.

GeoComply, a geolocation solution company, has recorded 11.3 million transactions in Ohio over the course of New Year’s weekend. This follows Ohio’s highly anticipated launch at the beginning of 2023 when multiple sports betting operators went live in the Buckeye State.

This impressive amount of transactions propelled Ohio to the apex of the list of states that GeoComply collected data on over New Year’s weekend. It surpassed even New York, New Jersey and other states known for their enthusiastic sports betting demographics.

GeoComply SVP of Compliance Lindsay Slader commented: “We are thrilled to welcome another state into the regulated online sports betting sector. As expected, residents of the Buckeye State enthusiastically greeted the market at the moment the calendar changed over to 2023.

“Today, about 44% of the American population can bet online with legal and responsible operators. The launch of regulated online sports betting in Ohio will better protect its citizens, with an increased commitment to responsible gambling and new funding for critical state programs.”

Looking at the finer details of the stats laid out by GeoComply, much can be gleaned from Ohio’s inaugural weekend of sports betting. There were 17 operators active in the state, 784,000 unique accounts, and 11.3 million geolocation transactions (234,000 of these took place during the first hour of New Year’s Day).

GeoComply was the first geolocation and ID verification services compliance supplier to be awarded a conditional license by the Ohio Casino Control Commission. It secured this in September and later received the equivalent license from the Maryland State Lottery and Gaming Control Agency in November.
