Kansas lottery ticket revenues rise, while traditional casino games drop

Sports betting has been legal in Kansas since September 2022 and data shows that, over these three months, there has been a rise in lottery ticket sales, while retail casino revenue has fallen.
Results on monthly sports betting in the Sunflower State showed that September brought in $160.5m. Meanwhile, October generated $189.9m, while November garnered $186.3m, making for a total of $536.7m; impressive numbers for one fiscal quarter.
The robust hauls made in the Kansan sports betting industry led many to question how it would affect the state’s lottery and casino gambling scenes – and whether it would slice into their revenues.
Kansas Lottery Executive Director Stephen Durrell said that these two ‘traditional’ gambling industries would not collapse due to sportsbook’s successful first three months in the state. He commented: “They like to stay in their individual silos. They don’t typically cannibalize each other.”
The most recent statistics on legal sports gambling (managed through the state’s four casinos in Dodge City, Pittsburg, Mulvane and Kansas City, Kansas) showed a leveling of sports betting and a statewide rise in net revenue and state tax collections.
FanDuel and DraftKings both reported net positive revenue in Kansas for the first time in November.
Gambling revenue from ‘traditional games’ in the four casinos was reported to be $33.7m in September, with October casino revenue dropping to $32.9m. The revenue report for November showed another decline to $31.6m.
However, the Kansas Lottery fared much better. In September, it reported ticket sales of $24.6m which then surged to $30.2m in October. In November, interest in Powerball and Mega Millions pushed sales to $35.5m.
Durrell commented: “Like any business, it’s going to have its ebbs and flows. We’re all curious to see what happens.”
