Slot machine supplier Aristocrat Leisure Ltd. is set to pay $31 million as part of a $155 million class-action settlement related to two lawsuits. Both lawsuits were brought against Aristocrat and Churchill Downs Incorporated (CDI) due to the company’s online social gaming platforms, with CDI being responsible for the rest of the settlement ($124 million).
Aristocrat bought the Big Fish Games brand from CDI in 2018 for $990 million. The brand was responsible for several online platforms and plaintiffs in the lawsuits claimed some of those platforms offered games of chance, which Washington state law forbids.
The two lawsuits are based on three particular platforms - Big Fish Casino, Jackpot Magic Slots and Epic Diamond Slots - that offered tokens that had value, which plaintiffs thought turned these free games into games of chance.
The company stated the settlement is still pending for approval from the US Federal District Court for the Western District of Washington.
