Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Bristol unveils children’s art tiles to public
Casino wishes for the Bristol community to revisit this beloved artwork, designed in the 90s.
Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Bristol has unveiled a children’s art tile mosaic in the Mall section of the venue. The artwork was originally painted by Bristol community children in the late 1990s and has been carefully preserved since.
The permanent Bristol Casino has not yet opened its doors to the public: it will officially open in the summer of 2024. In a slide presentation to the Virginia Lottery Board in April, Hard Rock announced there would be a ‘Grand Opening Summer of 2024.’ The temporary casino and Mall section, however, have recently been opened to the public.
Hard Rock Bristol Casino Spokesperson Andy Poarch commented: “We recognize there is a lot of history with the tiles and a lot of nostalgia surrounding the tiles – a great point of pride with the citizens of Bristol. We heard countless stories of folks who spent their childhood coming to the mall and who saw the tiles and painted the tiles, and it was a real point of local community pride.
“During the construction phase, we made significant efforts to ensure they would be preserved and safeguarded. We encased them in a protected wood structure during construction.”
According to Poarch, the casino has received plenty of positive feedback about the mosaic installation from the Bristol community.
He encourages residents of Bristol who painted a tile when they were kids to stop by and take a picture of themselves with their tile: “There have been a number of folks who come in or will come in who painted one of the tiles. So, we’re encouraging folks – please take a picture of your tile, and post it on social media.”
At least one of the current casino employees was a childhood contributor to the tile mosaic. Virginia House Delegate Will Wampler, an instrumental figure in passing the law that allowed the casino to be built in Bristol, also painted one of the tiles as a child.
