The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission (IRGC) has published its sports betting figures for the month of April. The state has seen a drop in wagers by 24% compared to March.
During the month of April, bettors statewide placed a total of $177.4m in wagers through Iowa’s 18 sportsbooks. Last month’s figures reflected an increase in activity since this time last year, with a 50% rise in wagers from the $118.4m placed during April 2021.
According to the IRGC report, more than 91% of bets placed in April were done online. The generated more than $12.4m in revenue, a rise of 61% from last April.
DraftKings, Caesars and FanDuel held the top three spots for the largest amount of wagers placed during April, with $44m, $39.2m and $38.4m respectively. BetMGM also cleared more than $10m in bets during the month, reaching a total of $21m in wagers.
Since the Supreme Court repealed PASPA in 2018, online gambling is currently available in 32 states, with 18 of those allowing for legal online sports wagering.
According to the US Census Bureau, those jurisdictions represent more than 166.9 million people.
The state of Iowa was the 11th state to legalize sports betting. Iowa first went live in May 2019 after Governor Kim Reynolds signed its sportsbook legislation into law. The first sports bets in the state were placed during the 2019 football season.
Since then, Iowa has raked in more than $3.77bn in sports bets and paid $15.9m in taxes.
Bettors throughout the state have been able to sign up for sportsbook accounts using their smartphones and other electronic devices since 2021.
