New Jersey Super Bowl wagering numbers: 22% year-on-year increase

Growth suggests that the state will not face the steep decline in action feared after legalization of New York mobile betting.
The Garden State began growing money trees last Sunday after New Jerseyans wagered nearly $143.7m on Super Bowl LVI.
According to unaudited preliminary data released by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, the above-stated figure resulted in a payout of $135.9m. For the sportsbooks this meant wins of $7.8m.
These figures account for the state’s 12 retail sportsbooks as well as its 24 mobile wagering apps.
In comparison to last year, the growth of the market is stark: New Jersey’s total sports handle was $117.4m, with a payout of $106.1m and earnings of $11.3m.
Altogether, this year’s numbers signal a 22.4% increase in handle from 2021.
This last fact is significant on account of changes that have been happening recently on the other side of the Hudson River: with the legalization of mobile sports betting in New York State, many in New Jersey feared a decline in action. Those fears have so far proven unfounded.
New Jersey followed something of a national trend last weekend. Sunday saw far and away the most bet on Super Bowl to date. Handle in Nevada was $179m. Numbers from New York are yet to be tallied, but that state is coming off what was the most successful debut month in American history. In January, it had a nearly $2bn sports handle.
Prior to the game, the American Gaming Association predicted that $7.61bn would be bet by 31.4 million Americans. This figure comes out to 18% of Super Bowl viewers.
This 35% increase from 2021 is nothing if not indicative of an industry on the rise.
