Four Louisiana casinos issued sports betting licenses, can launch Oct. 31

Louisiana Gaming Control Board chairman Ronnie Johns said the sports betting licenses are effectively at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 31.
The Louisiana Gaming Control Board has issued retail sports betting licenses for Harrah’s New Orleans, Boomtown Casino in Harvey, L’Auberge Baton Rouge and Horseshoe Casino in Bossier City, paving the way for the casinos to take bets Oct. 31 at 12:01 a.m.
“It will be up to them if they take bets on Sunday if they are ready to do so,” LGCB chairman Ronnie Johns told The Advocate newspaper.
According to the newspaper report, state police are working overtime to review applications from other properties.
The Halloween launch would give the four licensed casinos the opportunity to accept wagers in time for Week 8 of the NFL season. This Sunday presents sportsbooks with a potent opportunity to attract customers, as the New Orleans Saints host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a clash of NFC South heavyweights.
Louisiana bettors also have the option of traveling to Paragon Casino Resort, a tribal casino that has been accepting sports bets since Oct. 6.
Caesars Entertainment has prepared for the launch of Louisiana online sports betting by allowing bettors to pre-register on the Caesars Sportsbook app, but it could be a couple months before the state gives the green light for online wagering, Johns told The Advocate.
One reason for the delay in online sports betting is that state police need to ensure that geofencing works.
Sports betting is limited to the 55 of 64 parishes that legalized the activity on election day last November.
