Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed sports betting and online gambling into law.
Michigan becomes the 20th state to legalize sports wagering.

The state hopes to have sports betting rolled out by early March in time for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

President and CEO of American Gaming Association Bill Miller said: “With Gov. Whitmer’s
signature, twenty states plus DC now have legalized sports betting in the United States, capping off a tremendous year of growth. These new markets offer more Americans a safe, legal way to wager on sports while positively impacting communities, like in Michigan, where revenue from sports betting will generate needed resources for public education, first responders, and, importantly, responsible gaming.”

Michigan will impose an 8.4% tax on sports wager receipts, while tax on online gambling will range from 20% to 28%.

Governor Whitmer, a Democrat, agreed to a package of bills that earned bipartisan support in the state legislature.

Under the new law, internet casino gambling, online poker and daily fantasy sports will be legal.

Michigan currently holds three commercial casinos all located in the greater Detroit area.

Additionally there are 23 tribal casinos across the state.

Michigan joins fellow Midwestern states Iowa and Indiana in legalizing sports betting, as well as Illinois.
