Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport reported 3.8m arriving and departing passengers in August, a decline of 8.3% from July and on par with June, according to figures released by the Clark County Department of Aviation.
Through the first eight months of the year, passenger volume is down 30.1% compared to 2019.
Domestic travelers represented 3.7m of visitors in August, down 8.5% from August 2019.
International flights accounted for approximately 79,000 passengers.
McCarran officials told local news outlets that August numbers usually trail July and that major outages with Spirit Airlines in early August affected passenger volume.
Southwest Airlines led all carriers with 1.42m passengers flying in and out of Las Vegas. Frontier Airlines generated 375,000 passengers, while 368,000 traveled on Spirit.
Frontier and JetBlue Airlines each experienced more travelers in August than in the same month in 2019.
The Delta variant of Covid-19 likely turned away some travelers who feared the spread of the disease.
Clark County saw a rising positivity rate andCovid-19 cases in August. By the end of the month, the county’s positivity was at 11%.
McCarran will soon see a rise in international travelers.
Beginning in November, international tourists who are fully vaccinated will be able to enter the United States with proof of a negative Covid-19 test.
