Montana Lottery now accepting sports betting license applications

The Montana Lottery has begun accepting license applications for its Sports Bet Montana program.
Last week, the Montana Lottery Commission’s rules for sports wagering were officially added to the state’s Administrative Registrar, clearing the way for the applications to be received.

Businesses with the proper liquor serving license will be eligible to apply for sports betting
licenses.

Up to 1,400 licenses could be awarded, though the number is expected to be significantly fewer as the state lottery introduces sports wagering.

Montana bettors will be permitted to wager through Sports Bet Montana kiosks inside licensed establishments or through a mobile app within the physical confines of the location.

The state lottery awarded Intralot a contract to be its sole sports betting operator. Intralot was given the contract despite Montana holding no competitive bidding process.

Intralot is also preparing to roll out a sports wagering product in Washington DC.

Montana will not bring in outside operators such as DraftKings or FanDuel, as the state lottery is solely responsible over overseeing sports wagering.

Gov. Steve Bullock signed sports betting legislation into law back in May.

In the months since, lottery officials drafted betting rules and held public meetings to receive feedback.

Lottery officials will be responsible for training retailers at licensed locations on how to
implement sports betting.
