City of Richmond wants citizens’ advice on how to spend casino money

The City of Richmond, Virginia is asking citizens to present feedback on how to spend a one-time payment of $25.5m if a casino resort referendum is passed this November.

Urban One-backed ONE Casino + Resort has committed to paying the city a one-time payment if voters back the $650m in a November 2 vote. The proposed casino site is in South Richmond between I-95 and Richmond Highway.

“The money can be used to pay for many projects in our city, especially in the areas closest to the site,” the City of Richmond said in a graphic sent out to residents.

Richmond opened an online survey August 13 that asks residents to answer more than a dozen questions related to how the city should prioritize the money.

“How much of this money should go to projects in the Southside, primarily the 8th and 9th districts, which are closest to the proposed site?,” the survey asks.

Responders are asked to rank the types of projects they’d most like to see the money spent on, including playground and trails, walking infrastructure projects, city and community buildings, parks, school-related projects, bus transportation projects and road safety and beautification projects.

Richmond will hold a virtual meeting on August 16 at 6:00 p.m. EST to discuss citizen feedback and another in-person meeting August 23 also at 6:00 p.m.

If approved, ONE is expected to provide approximately 1,300 jobs and generate millions in revenue to Richmond.

ONE would be the only Black-majority owned casino in the US.
