Detroit casinos generate July revenue of $117m

Detroit, Michigan’s three commercial casinos produced July aggregate revenue of $117m, a 9.3% increase from June.
July revenue for MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino Hotel and Greektown Casino amounted to a 1% decline from July 2019, the last comparable year.
The state of Michigan collected $9.4m in gaming taxes while the city of Detroit took in $13.8m in wagering taxes.
MGM led the market with revenue of $53.8m, a 16% increase from June and the casino’s highest win since December 2019. MGM has generated more than $300m in revenue through the first seven months of the year.
MotorCity and Greektown saw less dramatic increases month-to-month. MotorCity took in July revenue of $38.5m, up 3.5% from June while Greektown collected $23.4m for a 4.9% rise.
July revenue from Detroit’s three casinos was the most since February 2020, the month before Covid-19 initially shut down properties.
Retail sports betting handle was down significantly from the prior month, as the casinos’ land-based sportsbooks combined for $18.3m in wagers compared to $24.4m in June. Sports betting revenue $1.2m compared to $2.3m in June.
Retail sports betting contributed $100,000 to state and city coffers.

July tends to be one of the weakest months for sports betting handle. Detroit’s casinos figure to benefit from the return of Detroit Lions preseason games in August.
